¡Hola!

Have you recently started studying Spanish? Would you run away when you hear the words “verbs”, “conjugation”, “infinitive”, etc.

If you said yes to all the above, keep reading! This will interest you!

Working out the verbs is WAY easier than you think!
A verb is the most important part in a phrase – and without it whatever we were saying just wouldn’t make sense…

I will explain you how verbs work in the simplest way. Let’s get started!

There are three concepts that we need to understand beforehand:

1 – The term “conjugate” means to show the different forms of a verb, according to its person and number (I, we, she, they) and tense (present, past, future).

2 – A verb in “infinitive” is a verb with no form – no conjugation according to its person and number. In simple words: no one is doing the action of that verb.

You’ll understand this in a sec with these examples:

A verb in infinitive form would be “hablar” – to speak

A verb conjugated would be “yo hablo” – I speak

Easier right?

and 3 – In Spanish we have 2 main type of verbs:

Irregular verbs: the love is less strong for these ones as we cannot apply such straight forward rules… (Learn how to conjugate Spanish irregular verbs here)

Do you want to learn how to speak Spanish? If so, you might have memories of trying to prevent yourself from falling...

Do you want to learn how to speak Spanish? If so, you might have memories of trying to prevent yourself from falling asleep in Spanish class.

Even though you might have been bored in school, there are more creative ways to learn Spanish.

Did you know that you could learn how to speak Spanish by watching TV?

If you enjoy watching TV, you can turn your entertainment into Spanish education!

Take a look at a few key tips below if you would like to learn Spanish by watching TV.

The Benefits Of Learning How To Speak Spanish By Watching TV

Even though TV is primarily a source of entertainment, it can also help you learn how to speak Spanish.

Some of the biggest benefits of using television to help you learn how to speak Spanish include:

You will have an easier time paying attention because you will be entertained as you learn.

Watching movies, TV shows, and local news in Spanish is more realistic. You can hear how people talk to each other in Spanish-speaking countries.

You will learn what words are used more frequently. You can focus your time and energy on learning Spanish words that you will use constantly.

You will learn about certain idioms, phrases, and expressions that a textbook will not teach you.

These are a few of the biggest reasons why it is a good idea to learn how to speak Spanish by watching TV.

How To Learn Spanish By Watching TV

If you would like to learn how to speak Spanish by watching TV, there are a few tips you should follow. They include:

Put The TV On In The Background

If you want to learn how to speak Spanish by watching TV, the first step is to increase your exposure. You might want to put the TV on in the background.

Make sure you can hear what people are saying. For example, if you are getting on the treadmill for a while, you may want to turn on some Spanish in the background. The more you hear it, the more you will learn.

Repetition Is Key

If you are serious about learning how to speak Spanish by watching TV, repetition is everything. The more you practice, the better you will get at it.

The first thing you should do is focus on one movie or one TV series. Then, try to watch it several times. The more you hear it, the easier it’ll be to memorise.

You can memorise certain dialogues, phrases, and key vocabulary words. Even though it might sound silly to watch the same show over and over again, this is one of the best ways for you to learn how to speak Spanish.

Need help finding some good TV shows? Have a look at the best Spanish shows on Netflix!

Write It Down

The more muscles you use while learning Spanish, the more you will remember.

Therefore, as you listen to your Spanish movie or TV show, try to write down what you hear. That way, you force your brain to focus on each individual word.

Sometimes, when you listen to words or phrases, you only focus on listening to what you know. Your brain may overlook what you don’t know. If you force your hands to write down what you hear, you will learn more words and phrases.

Use English Subtitles And Spanish Subtitles

Finally, you should turn on your English subtitles and Spanish subtitles. That way, you are certain you understood what you just heard:

English subtitles are helpful because they will allow you to translate between English and Spanish. You can test your translation and ability to understand as you watch the show. What do you think you heard? What do the English subtitles say?

Then, it is important to turn on Spanish subtitles as well. That way, you will learn how to spell whatever you hear in Spanish. This is particularly helpful if you are trying to write down what you hear. That way, you know your ears are hearing the Spanish words and phrases correctly.

Learn Spanish By Watching TV

Television can be a powerful tool if you would like to learn how to speak Spanish.

There are countless news programs, movies, and TV series that will teach you common Spanish phrases and vocabulary. When you learn how Spanish people speak to each other, you will have an easier time learning the Spanish language.

At the same time, it might be helpful to sign up for a few classes as well. There is nothing quite like working with a tutor who can help you learn Spanish. If you want to become fluent, you need to use Spanish regularly. Join here if you want to become an AnnaSpanish student!

You can learn Spanish pronunciation rules one step at a time. In this blog, we’ll start from the beginning with Spanish letters,...

You can learn Spanish pronunciation rules one step at a time. In this blog, we’ll start from the beginning with Spanish letters, proceed to the middle with how to break down syllables, and end with the three rules on syllable stress.

Why Bother To Learn The Rules Of Spanish Pronunciation?

The best reason to learn Spanish pronunciation rules is that they are consistent. You don’t have to learn exceptions. In Spanish, pronunciation rules are based solely on how the word is spelled or where a syllable has an accent mark. If you learn Spanish pronunciation rules, you can pronounce any Spanish word.

Start By Learning The “Abcedario” (Alphabet).

Spanish has 27 letters, the same 26 letters as English plus the letter ñ. In Spanish, consonants are pronounced much the same as in English. Spanish vowels (a, e, i, o, u) sound like ah, eh, ee, o, and oo.

If you need practice and want to hear a native speaker pronounce Spanish letters, log on to the SpanishDict web page “Spanish Alphabet pronunciation.”

Next, Learn How To Separate Spanish Words Into Syllables

Learning how to pronounce new Spanish words is made easier if you can break them into syllables. In Spanish, the following general rules of breaking down word syllables apply:

Generally, When A Vowel Is Not Next To Another Vowel, It Forms A Separate Syllable. Thus:

hablo (I speak) is two syllables and is broken into HA-blo

cómoda (comfortable) is three syllables and is broken down as CO-mo-da

When the vowels a, e, or o appear together, the syllable breaks between those vowels. Thus:

creo (I believe) is broken into CREH-o.

caos (chaos) is broken into CAH-os

coreano (Korean) is broken into co-reh-Ah-no

Vowels Combine To Form Diphthongs

In the above examples, the vowels a, e, and o, are considered “strong” vowels. The vowels i and u are known as weak vowels and play a distinct role in word pronunciation. Combine a weak vowel with a strong vowel, and you get what’s known as a diphthong—or a combination sound. Thus:

nueve (new) consists of two syllables—NUEH-veh (pronounced nweh-veh)

fui consists of one syllable and is pronounced fuee

satisfaccicón (satisfaction) consists four syllables of sa-tis-fac-ción* (pronounced sah-tees-fahk-SHEEYON)—the weak vowel i combines with the strong vowel o make the diphthong “yo” sound.

*Note when two consecutive consonants appear in a Spanish word, they form two separate syllables. Exceptions are ll and rr, which form single sounds in Spanish.

Vowels With Accents Affect Both Pronunciation And Syllable Breaks.

When a diphthong has an accent mark on the weak vowel, the combination sound is dropped and the word breaks between the weak and strong vowel. Hence, tío (uncle) is broken into tí-o. The name María is broken into Ma-rí-a.

The Diaeresis Vowel Ü

There is one more “accented” vowel in Spanish. It’s the diaeresis ü. When ü appears in a Spanish word, it always follows the “hard g”* and is pronounced with a w sound, even before an e or i.

The following examples compare the uses of the diaeresis form ü and vowel u when it follows the letter g:

Use 1. The Ü Is Pronounced Like A W Before The Letters E And I:

vergüenza (shame) is pronounced vehr-GWEN-zah

lingüista (linguist) is pronounced leen-GUIS-tah

Use 2. The U (Without The Diaeresis) Is Silent Before The Letters E And I:

guerra (war) is pronounced GEH-rra

guitarra (guitar) is pronounced gee-TARR-ah

So, the ü is an exception to use 2.

Use 3. The U (Without The Diaeresis) Is Pronounced Like A W Before The Letters A And O:

guapo (handsome) is pronounced GWA-po

antiguo (ancient) is pronounced ahn-TEE-gwo

Finally, Learn Which Syllables In Spanish Words Receive Stress

Word stress is the emphasis of a particular syllable in a word when speaking it. In Spanish, you only need to know three rules:

1. If The Word Ends In A Vowel, An N, Or An S, Stress Is On The Second-To-The-Last Syllable. Thus:

tengo (I have) = TEN-go

computadora (computer) = com-pu-ta-DO-ra

joven (Young) = JO-ven

hombres (men) = HOM-bres

2. If The Word Ends With A Consonant (Other Than N Or S), Stress Is On The Last Syllable. Thus:

estoy (I am) = es-TOY

feliz (happy) = fe-LIZ

trabajador (worker)= tra-ba-ja-DOR

español (Spanish) = es-pa-ÑOL

3. If The Word Has A Vowel With An Acute Accent (As In Á, Í, Ó, Ú), Ignore Rules 1 And 2 Above And Stress The Accented Syllable.

estábamos (we were) = es-TA-ba-mos”. Without the accent, it would be “es-ta-BA-mos

habló (she spoke) = ha-BLO. Without the accent it would be HA-blo.

inglés (English) = in-GLES. Without the accent it would be IN-gles

All these rules notwithstanding, the very best way to learn Spanish pronunciation is to hear it from a native Spanish speaker.
With the right commitment, consistency, and time management, it is possible for anyone to learn Spanish within 6 months. To break this...

With the right commitment, consistency, and time management, it is possible for anyone to learn Spanish within 6 months. To break this down, 6 months comes out to 50 hours a month, 12.5 hours a week, and two hours a day. This sounds like a great deal of time. However, it is possible to dedicate two hours a day to this task if you plan and organize properly.

Here are some tips on how to go about it:

1. Find your motivation

If you want to learn Spanish, it is likely that you have some specific purpose in mind. This is your motivation. And holding to this mission or purpose will encourage you.

The human brain is highly efficient in the retention of anything that is important. If the learning of Spanish is important to your future professional or personal life, it will help you become proficient in the language.

You can also motivate yourself through others. Rather than keeping the fact that you are learning Spanish to yourself share this mission with others on social media. If your Facebook friends are waiting for your language update, it can help you feel more obliged to meet your goals.

2. Set your goals and organize your calendar

It is best to be realistic about the demands on your day, and how you can fit your daily Spanish lesson in it. You should also be honest about when your mind works best. Some people cannot function mentally in the morning. If you know you are one of them, then it may be futile to do your Spanish lesson in the mornings. For others, their day is so packed with tasks and activities, they are spent by the time the evening rolls around. If you are in this latter category, then it may be better to do your lesson in the early morning.

3. Choose your resources

The best way to learn Spanish is with the help of a native speaker with experience and expertise as a language instructor. Fortunately, it is easy to find such tutors online. In fact, this is becoming the medium of choice for many aspiring Spanish speakers.

To bolster your language skills, you can also download Spanish language apps for adults and listen regularly to a Spanish-language podcast. These can be done while you are standing in line at the store or while you are commuting to and from work.

You should also enlist the larger Spanish culture. There are a great many Spanish-language films and television series on Netflix. Try watching them without subtitles and see how much you can comprehend. You can also listen to Spanish music and read along with the lyrics.

4. Train your ear

One of the hardest parts of learning a new language is opening your ears to new sounds. This is especially difficult if you have not lived around Spanish speaking people or in an area in which Spanish is widely spoken.

Each language has its own phonological system in which letters and words are pronounced in a certain way. To master Spanish, you must not only learn vocabulary and grammar, you must also train your ear to distinguish new sounds.

Here is where Spanish culture can help. Saturating yourself in Spanish through film and television will make your ear familiar with the language. This method should not be underestimated. The proliferation of American movies and television programs around the world have helped millions of non-native English speakers learn the language. English speakers can similarly learn to comprehend Spanish through this media.

5. Train Your Mouth

Another challenge for English speakers is pronunciation. English and Spanish share the Latin alphabet. This gives native English speakers an advantage. They need not learn an entirely new set of letters and characters.

However, as an English speaker, your tongue and mouth have not been trained to articulate Spanish words. You will need to activate new words in your brain. The only way to do so is through the practice of pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm.

This one of the great advantages of working with a one-on-one Spanish tutor. It will compel you to repeat Spanish words and mix them to create new sentences. This is the most efficient way to train your mouth and tongue.

6. Befriend a Native Speaker

Hiring a tutor will help you make progress in the language quickly. You will learn even faster if you engage with a native speaker regularly and informally. It can be a colleague at work, a friend from school, or someone who you have come to know in your neighborhood. Most such individuals will find it a pleasure to hold conversation with you with the aim of improving your proficiency.

7. Learn About the Spanish-Speaking Country You Plan to Visit

While this can be done through textbooks and documentaries, you may be better off reading more solid historical and literary works about the place. If you are planning to move to Spain, for example, the novels and essays that Ernest Hemingway wrote about the country are still relevant. You should also read books by Giles Tremlett and Hugh Thomas.

The key to learning Spanish grammar is to keep your expectations realistic and your goals within reach. There is a saying in...

The key to learning Spanish grammar is to keep your expectations realistic and your goals within reach. There is a saying in Spanish, “Un elefante se come bocado a bocado’—”The elephant is eaten one bite at a time.”

But before you start eating the giant elephant that is Spanish grammar, it would be a great idea to take a look at the task before you. Think about this: It took you at least 10 years to begin mastering English grammar. You had to learn verb tenses and rules like pronoun case (I vs. me). Then there’s subject/verb agreement, the difference between adjectives and adverbs, and so on.

Spanish grammar is more complicated than English. Fortunately, if you’re good at English grammar, you can transfer a lot of your learning to Spanish. Concepts like nominative and objective case in pronouns will be easier to understand, for example.

Take Baby Steps First

Let’s take a bite of the elephant and start with some basic things you can do to learn Spanish grammar. You learned English by baby steps. First, you learned the names of things–nouns. Then you added action words like “go,” and “eat.” Use the same steps in learning Spanish grammar. Build your vocabulary and don’t forget that Spanish nouns come in the masculine and feminine gender—el (los), la (las).

Build Your Vocabulary

Learn at least one new Spanish word each day. Write it out and pronounce the new word. Words are the building blocks of grammar, and with practice you’ll learn to connect the parts and see the relationships and similarities between Spanish and English grammar.

Look For Patterns

Finding consistent patterns in Spanish grammar makes the job of learning easier. For example, every basic form of a Spanish verb ends in the letters -ar, -er, or -ir. (The basic form is the verb’s meaning, as in hablar means “to talk,” but does not indicate who is doing the talking (person) or when (the tense).

So, in regular verbs, those endings are tacked on to what are known as verb stems. A verb stem consists of the part of the verb in front of the ending. For example, in hablar, the stem is habl-.

Verb Conjugation Is Crucial

Which leads us to probably the most difficult thing to master in Spanish Grammar—verb conjugation. In English we conjugate a verb by adding the person (I, you, she, etc.) to the tense (present, past, future, etc.). So the present tense, first person of the English verb “talk” is “I talk.”

In Spanish, “I talk” is (yo) hablo. In Spanish we add the “-o” to the verb stem “habl-.“ The pronoun yo (I) in Spanish is optional and only used for emphasis to add a richer meaning.

Concentrate On The Present Tense Of Spanish Verbs

Learn the present tense before tackling all those other tenses. Spanish has 7 simple tenses and seven compound tenses, along with spelling changes to give commands. Then there are the subjunctive mood forms, which are covered in advanced Spanish courses.

Fortunately, if you do a good job of learning the present tense, you can apply what you learned along with the exceptions in irregular verbs—which, happily, follow consistent patterns.

Learn The Most Common Verbs

Also, concentrate on the most used forms of the Spanish verbs “to be”—ser and estar. Both are irregular in the present tense, and each is used to indicate permanence (ser) or location or temporary state (estar).

Mastery of another well used irregular verb, ir, which means “to go,” and tener, which means “to have”, can jump start your fluency in Spanish. Note, too, that you can find consistency in irregular verbs; for example, the first person, present tense forms of the irregular verbs ser, estar, and ir are soy, estoy, and voy—each ending in the letter y.

Why You Should Know Present Tense Conjugations

Concentrating on the present tense verbs is the foundation of moving on to the other tenses. For example, later you will learn that the past tense for hablo is hablé—same verb stem, but different ending.

So, leave all those other tenses behind. You have enough work to do in the present tense. For example, you’ll encounter verb stem spelling changes in a few verbs like encontrar (to find). The verb stem includes the letters “ue.” For example, Spanish for I find is encuentro. Those spelling changes only occur in the present tense, but you’ll need to know that when you learn about forming the imperative mood, which is used to give commands.

Are you thinking about learning Spanish? If so, you should go for it!

The Foreign Service Institute has ranked 60 spoken languages from easiest to hardest, Category 1 being the easiest and category 5 the hardest. Spanish is in category 1. On average, native English reach proficiency in the language within 600 hours of instruction.

Why Spanish is Not Hard to Learn

Spanish is a Romance language and has much in common with the languages that were at the center of the Ancient Roman Empire: Italian, French, and Portuguese. English, on the other hand, stems from old Germanic languages that were spoken by people from the northern regions of that country. However, its development was significantly influenced by both French and Latin. This is partly what connects it to Spanish, and lowers some of the barriers the two languages might otherwise have.

Here are some of the reasons why Spanish is not that hard for an English speaker to learn:

1. There are cognates.

A cognate is a word that looks or sounds familiar. English shares many linguistic roots with Spanish, and these similarities manifest as cognates. Even though a sentence in Spanish may at first seem incomprehensible to an English speaker. If listened to carefully, they will recognize certain similar roots.

Take this sentence in Spanish: El doctor usa el telefono publico en el parque.

The English translation is: The doctor uses the public phone in the park.

Although this is a very basic sentence, it proves the point: English speakers are bound to feel a certain familiarity with Spanish. Cognates make it easy to achieve a high level of comprehension in the language very quickly.

2. Similar Alphabet

As you may have noticed from the sample sentence above, English and Spanish use the Latin Alphabet. This means you need not learn a new alphabet or characters. There is an additional ñ in the Spanish alphabet. But learning when to use and how to pronounce this letter is not so difficult.

3. Pronunciation is Uncomplicated

The fact that English and Spanish share the same alphabet makes it easier for native speakers of the former to pronounce the latter. Nearly half the letters in the Spanish alphabet are pronounced the same in English. Another advantage is that Spanish pronunciation rarely changes. Unlike English, which seems to change at random.

4. Spanish is a Widely Spoken Language

Spanish is the third most spoken language in the world. This means you will hear it spoken a great deal no matter where you happen to be. In certain parts of the United States, it is spoken nearly everywhere, which will give you plenty of opportunities to practice hearing and speaking the language.

There Are Challenges to Learning Spanish

Despite the relative ease of learning Spanish, the task will come with difficulties. It is better to understand them from the outset. Doing so will make it easier to overcome them. Here are some of the challenges that native English speakers will face:

1. Gendered words

This concept is very strange to English speakers, and it takes them a while to get used to and understand it. In your first few lessons, you will notice that every Spanish noun is either masculine or feminine. Nouns that end in -o are masculine, and nouns that end in -a are feminine. There are exceptions to this rule, and you will have to memorize them.

2. The Grammar is Complex

Native English speakers take for granted the ease of its grammar. Every English verb has two tense forms: simple present and simple past. In Spanish, almost evert verb has a different conjugation in multiple tenses and moods. There are also personal pronouns in Spanish that have no equivalent in English.

The only good thing about this complex grammar is that there are rules and patterns that make the learning process easier.

3. Spanish Syntax is Fluid

Spanish sentences can be composed in more than one way. The subject can come at the beginning, middle or end of a sentence. In some instances, it can be omitted altogether. As long as the subject the sentence is understood, the noun is not needed.

It will take a while to master these nuances, but it can be done over time.

4. Different Accents

Because Spanish is spoken all over the world, it is spoken with a range of different accents. The language is not even spoken the same within individual nations. If you plan to travel to or live in a particular Spanish-speaking country, you may find it difficult to understand regional accents.

Again, it will take time to adjust to this reality. But learning the basics of the language will make it much easier to do so.

In Summary

Spanish is not that hard for English speakers to learn. With dedicated study and practice, most people can gain proficiency in the language within months
